Get Infected
Akiko Murakami’s menswear collection is called ‘Get Infected’, and apart from the literal meaning, the viewer gets infected by the unusual and partly disgusting beauty of her style: Murakami takes her inspiration from ‘J-Horror’ – Japanese horror movies, and for this collection in particular the seminal movie ‘Ring’.
With her narrative conceptual approach she explores, interprets and recreates the story of ‘Ring’ on various levels simultaneously. The collection becomes images of the film, the fashion show turns into its theatrical re-enaction. Murakami presents five of these garment-images: The Video, Cursed, Appearance, Death and Sadako. Each of them tell us moments through their materials, patterns and details, and like in an ancient Japanese picture scroll, in their combination they unfold into the narration. Tailored entirely by hand the quality and detailing of Murakami’s garments reflects a genuine admiration and understanding of the Savile Row craft. The level of handcrafted tailoring and fashionable patterning combined with the conceptual approach make for a complete and focused collection.
